Samuel Gyamfi, the National Communication Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced opposition to the immediate suspension of Hon. Kwakye Yaw Ackah over allegations of anti-party conduct.
At a Functional Executive Committee (FEC) meeting on June 5, 2024, members discussed the Amenfi Central controversy concerning the legitimacy of Parliamentary candidate Joana Gyan. It was agreed that four constituency executives, accused of initiating a court case that led to an injunction against Gyan’s candidacy, would be suspended. These executives are:
- Mr. Raphael Andoh Kwaw (Chairman)
- Mr. Richmond Aleke (Organizer)
- Madam Grace Kwaw (Women’s Organizer)
- Madam Janet Fynn (Deputy Women’s Organizer)
While some members suggested suspending Hon. Kwakye Ackah, alleging his involvement in the controversy, Samuel Gyamfi opposed the move, citing a lack of evidence. “Let’s be fair to the MP; there is no proof that he is behind the people who have gone to court,” Gyamfi argued.
The committee ultimately decided to summon Hon. Kwakye Ackah to appear before the Political Committee to address the issue.
Background
This controversy stems from earlier disputes over the qualifications of Joana Gyan and Dr. Kojo Jones as NDC parliamentary candidates. Samuel Gyamfi, the late Sherry Ayitey, and Fifi Fiavi Kwetey had significant disagreements on this matter. Gyamfi contended that Gyan and Jones did not meet the necessary requirements, while Sherry Ayitey and Fifi Kwetey disagreed, advocating for their approval.
