In a shocking development, credible sources reveal that a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Greater Accra Region has allegedly paid GH₵1,000 to members of the party’s social media team to put an end to their ongoing criticism of Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko’s appointment as Acting Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).
Fianko’s appointment has stirred significant controversy within the party, especially after it was revealed that he played a key role in the controversial closure of Radio Gold and Radio XYZ in May 2019. This has led to fierce criticism from NDC grassroots, who accuse Fianko of siding with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In an attempt to quell the growing unrest, the MP called for a meeting of 23 members of the NDC social media team at the NCA building, where they were urged to understand the rationale behind Fianko’s appointment. The MP clarified that the appointment was made by President Mahama and that, despite personal preferences, party members must rally behind Fianko’s success.
“I am supporting Rev. Ing. Fianko because he is President Mahama’s choice. I wish to work with Dr. Attah Boateng, but I am not the appointing authority,” the MP stated. “There is a deliberate plan to tarnish my image because of my presidential ambitions. People want to destroy me, but I urge you to understand that the appointment is beyond me. All we can do is support Rev. Ing. Fianko to succeed.”
As the meeting shifted focus to addressing the party’s communication strategy, it was revealed that dedicated funding would be allocated to NDC social media efforts through one of the ministries. Team members are now expected to meet every Wednesday to strategize on defending government policies and promoting the party’s agenda.
Incentivizing attendance, each social media team member will receive GH₵1,000 for participating in the weekly meetings.
