Members of Parliament from the Minority Caucus staged a sit-in protest at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) demanding the release of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Dressed in symbolic black and red, the MPs marched from Parliament to the EOCO office, chanting and holding hands as they blocked the main entrance.

Their demonstration temporarily halted vehicular traffic in the bustling Accra Central area and drew significant public attention.

Chairman Wontumi has been in EOCO custody since Tuesday, May 27, after being invited by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for questioning in connection with alleged financial misconduct.

Although bail was granted on Wednesday—with conditions including a GH¢50 million bond and two sureties,Wontumi remained in custody after failing to meet those conditions.

The protest, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, was described as a call for justice and fair treatment.

Afenyo-Markin criticized EOCO’s handling of the case, insisting the continued detention was excessive.

Meanwhile, the former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong volunteering to stand as one of the sureties for Wontumi, intensifying pressure on EOCO.

As security forces maintained a heavy presence to manage the crowd, the sit-in continued with chants and placards calling for Wontumi’s immediate release.

The MPs vowed to sustain their protest until what they described as “politically motivated harassment” ends.
