The Minority in Parliament has called on President John Mahama to dismiss the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, if he fails to resign voluntarily over the ongoing DStv pricing controversy.
The demand comes in the wake of a public apology from MultiChoice Ghana after contradicting the Minister on the newly announced value-added packages.
Addressing the media on Thursday, October 02 Deputy Ranking Member of the Committee on Information and Communications, Charles Asuako Owiredu, accused Mr. George of mismanaging negotiations and wasting public resources in pursuing an unachieved 30% reduction in pay-TV costs.
According to Mr. Owiredu, the Minister’s actions have exposed “a lack of mental rigour in understanding and conducting negotiations” and demonstrated insufficient temperament for public office.
He criticized Mr. George for inaccurately claiming breakthroughs that MultiChoice later clarified as routine promotions, and for insulting citizens and industry stakeholders during the process.
The Minority also warned that the Minister’s arbitrary decisions have undermined regulators such as the National Communications Authority (NCA), threatening the growth of Ghana’s communications sector.
They further noted that these actions contravene the President’s code of conduct requiring candour and respect.
The Minority insists that Mr. George is unfit to continue in his role and called for decisive action to restore accountability and public confidence in the Ministry.
“For this display of ineptitude, incompetence, and penchant for deceit, We demand that the Minister render an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for the waste of the nation’s time and resources on this venture. We call on him to account for the fines levied on DStv and We deem him unfit to continue as the Minister for the Strategic Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, and therefore call on him to resign or for the President to fire him,” Mr. Owiredu stated.
