Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Majority Chief Whip, have introduced a Private Members’ Bill in Parliament seeking to scrap the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (Repeal) Bill, 2025, proposes returning full prosecutorial authority over corruption cases to the Attorney-General, citing constitutional alignment and efficiency.
The Bill’s memorandum criticizes the OSP for duplicating functions, causing institutional friction, delays, high operational costs, and limited impact over the past eight years.
Under the proposed plan, the Attorney-General’s Office would handle anti-corruption prosecutions through a specialised division, consolidating resources, improving coordination, and reducing administrative overheads.
Transitional costs would be managed within existing budgets.
Clauses 1 to 4 of the Bill provide for repeal, transitional arrangements, and preservation of lawful OSP actions.
