President John Dramani Mahama has ruled out any ambitions beyond Ghana’s constitutional two-term presidential limit, assuring Ghanaians and international partners that his leadership will focus on stability and fiscal responsibility rather than election-year politics.
His assurance comes amid opposition claims from the New Patriotic Party that he harbours plans to extend his presidency beyond the constitutional limit—an allegation Mahama dismissed by restating his respect for the two-term rule.
Speaking during bilateral engagements with Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam as part of his three-day state visit, Mahama stressed that stepping aside in 2028 provides him the unique freedom to safeguard the economy against the recurring cycle of election-driven overspending.
“I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to strengthening economic management ahead of the polls.
The president highlighted major economic gains under his second tenure, including declining inflation, falling interest rates, and a stronger cedi. These, he argued, demonstrate the benefits of disciplined governance when politics is kept separate from economic policy.
