President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Yokohama, Japan, to take part in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), which runs from August 20 to 22, 2025.
The high-level gathering brings together African heads of state, Japanese leaders, development partners, and global institutions to explore new strategies for accelerating Africa’s growth.
Key focus areas include sustainable industrialization, investment in human capital, climate-resilient infrastructure, and healthcare innovation.
President Mahama, leading a government delegation, is expected to champion Ghana’s commitment to inclusive economic policies, regional integration, and trade expansion.
On the sidelines, he will also hold bilateral talks with Japanese authorities, development partners, and prospective investors to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties.
TICAD, launched in 1993 by Japan in collaboration with the United Nations, the African Union Commission, the UNDP, and the World Bank, has become a major platform for advancing Africa-led development.
Ghana has historically benefited from TICAD initiatives in areas such as infrastructure, health, and technical cooperation.
This year’s summit is also expected to feature the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize awards ceremony, which recognizes outstanding contributions to medical research and healthcare services in Africa.
Analysts say the outcomes of TICAD 9 will shape the next phase of Africa–Japan cooperation, aligning with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
