Spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong, Kwesi Kwarteng, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful is fully prepared to contest in the party’s upcoming primaries, regardless of the timeline set by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on Wednesday, June 18, Mr. Kwarteng emphasized that Kennedy Agyapong remains focused on engaging delegates directly and presenting a compelling message to secure victory.

He stated that although there may be disagreements within the party regarding the January 31, 2026, date for the flagbearer election, the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team respects the decision and is focused on grassroots mobilization.

“Let me say that the National Council more or less were performing a constitutional duty. Of course, in the democratic dispensation, people may not necessarily be happy with any decision that comes from a body like the National Council, but at the end of the day, whether you agree or disagree, you may have to stay respected, especially when you are a member of the party and you are also being governed by the same constitution,” Kwarteng said.

“But we believe that elections are won at the police station, you have to have your message, you have to target the police station as they get to go to them, make your case, tell them what you want to do, if they buy into it, bingo, you get to move when win the election and becomes a flagbearer. So for us, our focus is more on getting to the polling station, speaking to the delegates, making sure that they believe in our message.”

He argued that Kennedy Agyapong stands out among the aspirants as the only candidate capable of restoring the NPP’s fortunes ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“which we have a very strong message, and we are of the view that Kennedy Agyapong is winnable, he is marketable, he is somebody in terms of within the short period of time, 2020, he can be able to rescue us power as a party,” he added.

The NPP, in a statement issued on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, officially announced that its presidential primaries will take place on Saturday, January 31, 2026, to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 elections.

The announcement, made by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, followed a meeting of the party’s NEC and National Council. Kodua clarified that the chosen date aligns with the party’s constitution and does not require any amendments.

The flagbearership race is expected to be keenly contested, with several high-profile party figures likely to enter the race, including Kennedy Agyapong, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Boakye Agyarko and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
