Firebrand politician and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has secured the number one spot on the ballot paper for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming presidential primary, slated for January 31, 2026.
The balloting exercise, held at the NPP’s national headquarters in Accra on Friday, October 10, 2025, was supervised by the party’s National Elections Committee in line with internal electoral regulations issued on July 29.
Agyapong’s placement at the top of the ballot is already generating excitement among his supporters, who see the number one position as a symbolic sign of momentum in his quest to lead the NPP back to power in 2028.
Following him on the ballot is Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the former Minister for Agriculture, who picked the second position, while former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia—seen by many as the establishment favourite—secured the third spot.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the former Minister of Education, and Kwabena Agyepong, the party’s former General Secretary, drew the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
The ballot draw marks a crucial stage in what analysts describe as one of the most competitive internal contests in the NPP’s history.
The aspirants are expected to intensify their nationwide campaigns in the coming weeks, engaging delegates and regional executives ahead of the January polls.
Party officials have assured members that the process remains transparent and fair, emphasizing the NPP’s commitment to a peaceful and credible primary that will unite the party heading into the 2028 general elections.
