Chairman of the Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo, has praised Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson for his work, describing it as focused and beneficial to the nation.
Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV, Adongo emphasized the importance of presidential backing in implementing tough economic decisions.
“Look, the work that His Excellency and his finance minister have done, you see, they need to applaud them. They need to get a mallam who will pray for them, for His Excellency John Mahama to start thinking from the other side, and get Ato Forson to suddenly lose how it is to run an economy. But as long as they continue to keep the focus, my brother, they will be forced to sing praises at the right time,” he said.
Adongo added that Dr. Forson’s determination and support from the president were key to the successes achieved so far.
“If you have a finance minister who doesn’t have the backing of the president, he will be a failure. Because there are certain difficult decisions that you will take, that even your colleagues are not comfortable with. But that is what is required to swallow the bitter pill and heal,” he noted.
He also highlighted Forson’s achievements in renegotiating financial agreements and generating direct benefits for Ghanaians.
“Agreements that required parliamentary approval under Article 1815… They were not brought. That required approval under the Public Financial Management Act, Section 33. Tax exemptions that were overbloated. That he was able, with his team, to renegotiate and give Ghanaians $9 million of benefits. Lower than what he came to inherit,” Adongo said.
The Finance Committee Chairman concluded by stressing that Forson’s focus and governance mentality could shape Ghana’s economic future and even electoral outcomes.
Adongo further indicated that Dr. Forson’s approach places Ghana first and could secure political victories for the NDC if maintained.
“He’s a young man… But just to let him understand that we, sitting back, were impressed with the work that he’s done. And that he should keep the focus. And if he keeps the focus, he will win the next election for the NDC. There’s no two ways about that,” he said.
