An Accra Circuit Court has convicted eight men for assaulting former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, and two others during the July 11 parliamentary re-run at the Methodist Church Polling Station in Ablekuma North.
This was announced by the police in a statement dated Tuesday, August 26, 2025.
According to the police, the convicts — identified as Jijani Mahamudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, Ali Saeed, and Al Mohammed Abubakar — pleaded guilty to conspiracy and assault charges when they appeared before the court on Monday.
Their victims included Koomson, the Deputy NPP Organiser, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, and a trader, Majeed Mohammed Saana.
The prosecutors noted that the group first attacked Koomson and Saana while they monitored polling activities, before turning on Kwei in a separate incident despite the presence of security officers.
Police investigators said the violence was captured on viral videos, which helped identify the perpetrators. Though the accused initially denied involvement in their caution statements, they later admitted their roles in court.
Presiding judge Isaac Addo deferred sentencing to Friday, August 29, 2025. Meanwhile, each convict has been granted bail of GH¢80,000 with one surety pending the ruling.
The case has reignited debate about rising incidents of electoral violence and the need for stronger deterrents ahead of future polls.
