Eight men have been found guilty for their involvement in violent clashes during the Ablekuma North parliamentary by-election re-run, with the Accra Circuit Court handing down fines of GH¢6,000 each or 24 months in prison.
The accused — Mohammed Abubakari, Tijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, and Ali Saeed (alias Bomba) — admitted to conspiracy to commit assault and three counts of assault. The convictions were delivered on Friday, August 29, 2025, by His Honour Isaac Addo.
Addressing the Court, the prosecutors narrated that the incident occurred at the Methodist Church Polling Station, where the victims were monitoring the election.
The group launched an unprovoked attack on former Minister of State and ex-MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Mavis Koomson, trader Majeed Mohammed Saana, and NPP Deputy Organiser Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei. Videos of the assault circulated widely online.
The case was fast-tracked after all eight men confessed to their actions, allowing the court to swiftly conclude proceedings. Each convict now faces either payment of the GH¢6,000 fine or a two-year jail sentence.
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) described the convictions as a critical step toward accountability and upholding the rule of law in Ghana’s electoral process.
Authorities have urged communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement to prevent further election-related violence, emphasizing that perpetrators of such acts will face justice.
