The Electoral Commission (EC) has dismissed calls for a rerun of the parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North Constituency, insisting that the collation process can still be completed despite delays in three polling stations.
Deputy EC Chairperson in charge of administration, Dr. Bossman Asare, made this known during an engagement with the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, June 19.
He was responding to questions from South Dayi MP and Minority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.
Dr. Asare revealed that while the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding a rerun in over 30 polling stations due to alleged irregularities, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is pushing for the collation process to proceed using the results from the three outstanding polling stations.
According to Dr. Asare, the Commission is not yet at the point where it must declare the results irretrievable, which would necessitate a rerun.
“So, for Ablekuma North, we have not reached the point where we will say we don’t have the results. When we try and we cannot get the results, that is when we will resort to the rerun. The rerun will be a last option. So once we get to that point, we’ll do it.,” he explained.
He added that the EC is ready to complete the collation but is being held back by the lack of security support from the Ghana Police Service.
Efforts by the Commission to secure police protection for the collation have been unsuccessful, as the service has indicated it is awaiting advice from the Attorney-General on how to proceed.
“But as we speak now, the Commission is ready to proceed with the coalition. We just need the support of the security agencies to enable us to complete it,” Dr. Asare stated.
The Ablekuma North parliamentary contest remains one of the unresolved cases from the 2024 general elections.
