Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has taken a swipe at Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for failing to honour his commitment to facilitate the return of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to Ghana by May 2025.
Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, Ayariga reminded the House that Afenyo-Markin had publicly assured lawmakers in February that Mr. Ofori-Atta—who was said to be undergoing medical treatment abroad—would return in May to respond to corruption-related investigations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
However, with no sign of the former minister as of June, Ayariga accused the Minority Leader of misleading Parliament and breaching the trust of his colleagues.
The OSP has since declared Mr. Ofori-Atta wanted and also triggers INTERPOL Red Notice against the former Finance Minister.
“Mr. Speaker, if I may say — referring to Afenyo-Markin — he promised this House that he would bring Ken Ofori-Atta in May. We are now in June. Where is Ken Ofori-Atta? Where is Ken? Where is Ken? You promised us that you would bring Ken to this House. You came here and made a promise. You stood on this floor and assured us that he would return in May. Now we are in June — where is Ken Ofori-Atta?”
Ayariga described the Minority Leader’s failure to follow through as a blow to his credibility, insisting that someone who cannot keep their word should not be taken seriously in the House.
“Mr. Speaker, he should no longer be heard in this House. When he makes promises, he does not fulfill them. He comes here, makes statements, and never follows through — and yet he questions the promises of others.”
