The Children’s Support Fund, set up to safeguard the future of the eight children left behind after the August 6 helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region, has received donations totaling GHS 3,576,600 and US$20,000.
The update was contained in a statement issued on Friday, August 29, 2025, by Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and Coordinator of the Fund.
According to the release, contributions recorded between August 19 and 28 came from both institutions and individuals, among them Ghana Airports Ltd, ARB Apex Bank, STL Foundation, Olam Agric, Fidelity Bank, ADB Bank, GLICO General Insurance, and the National Insurance Commission. Several private donors also contributed.
The Fund was first announced by President John Dramani Mahama during the state funeral on August 15, when he described it as a permanent symbol of the sacrifice made by the victims.
It is designed to cover the education, health, housing, insurance, and general welfare needs of their children from basic school through tertiary level.
Stanbic Bank Ghana seeded the initiative with GHS 500,000 and has opened two accounts at its Heights Branch in Accra to receive donations in both cedis and dollars.
Government has pledged additional funding and promised a management framework within 30 days to ensure transparency.
Donors and the public are assured of accountability, with weekly updates on contributions to be published by the Fund’s coordinators.
