Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and current Ashanti Regional Chairman, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Wontumi’s declaration comes in the wake of the NPP’s presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, where Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured victory to lead the party into the 2028 elections.
In a statement released on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, Wontumi emphasized that his bid is driven not by personal ambition, but by a commitment to “strengthen, rebuild, and unify” the party after recent challenges.
Describing himself as a grassroots leader dedicated to every member of the party, Wontumi said, “Our party has faced challenges and learned hard lessons along the way. At this critical moment, the NPP demands leadership that is steady, principled, and committed to unity… I do so not for personal ambition, but to strengthen, rebuild, and unify our great party.”
He underscored the need for courage and vision in the party’s leadership ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The NPP executives elections are expected to be fierce as prominent party figures formally throw their hats into the ring for key leadership positions.
