Residents and businesses in Cape Coast and surrounding communities in the Central Region will experience a planned power outage on Thursday, January 8, 2026, as the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and the Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) carry out major upgrade works at the Cape Coast Substation.
The outage will run from 6:00am to 10:00pm and is required to allow engineers replace the existing 33MVA transformer with a new 66MVA transformer, a move authorities say will significantly boost power delivery in the area.
According to a statement dated Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the Ministry said the upgrade is part of government’s broader efforts to strengthen the national power transmission system and meet growing electricity demand in the region.
“This critical upgrade forms part of the government’s broader agenda… to strengthen and expand the national power transmission infrastructure,” the statement said.
The Ministry explained that once completed, the new transformer will enhance the substation’s capacity, allow more households and businesses to connect to the national grid, and improve the quality, reliability and stability of power supply in Cape Coast and its environs.
GRIDCo engineers are expected to work throughout the day under strict supervision to ensure the project is completed within schedule.
“GRIDCo engineers, under the strict supervision of the Ministry, have put in place all necessary measures to ensure that the work is completed efficiently and within the scheduled timeframe,” the statement noted.
The Ministry and GRIDCo apologised to residents for any inconvenience the planned outage may cause, assuring the public of their commitment to reliable power delivery to support national development.
