The Majority side in Parliament has pushed back strongly against demands for the resignation of Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, following the ongoing standoff with DStv over subscription charges.
The Minority had earlier called on President John Mahama to dismiss Mr. George, if he fails to resign voluntarily, alleging that Mr. George has mismanaged negotiations and wasted public resources in pursuing an unachieved 30% reduction in pay-TV costs.
In a counter to Minority criticisms, the Majority argued that the calls were politically motivated and lacked merit, insisting that the Minister’s resolve to secure fairer pricing for Ghanaian consumers should be commended rather than condemned.
Speaking to the press, Tain MP Sulemana Adama revealed that Parliament’s select committee on Communications has already directed its secretariat to invite MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, along with the ministry, for dialogue to find a balanced resolution.
He dismissed suggestions that Sam George had mishandled the matter, stressing that the Minister had made significant progress in his short tenure.
“The call on Honorable Sam George to resign is unfounded,” Adama said, adding that even in previous governments, ministers facing more serious controversies did not resign.
The Majority urged Ghanaians to rally behind the Minister’s efforts, noting that the committee’s mediation will ensure that consumer interests and corporate operations are addressed in a constructive manner.
