Former Minister for Food and Agriculture and current Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has formed exploratory committee over his intention to lead the for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) in the 2028 general elections.
The revelation follows remarks by former Asante Akim North MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi, who disclosed to the media that internal consultations and strategic groundwork are already underway to position Dr. Acheampong as the NPP’s next presidential candidate.
He described the Abetifi MP as a unifying force and the ideal leader to rejuvenate the party and lead it to electoral success.
Confirming his intentions in an official statement, Dr. Acheampong said he had spent time reflecting on the party’s journey and the need for renewed leadership at a critical moment in its history.
A part of the statement reads, “I have taken time to reflect deeply on our journey as a Party and on my personal journey within our political tradition. I recognize that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) finds itself at a pivotal juncture which calls not only for unity but also for a renewed commitment to our core values.
After growing encouragement from a broad spectrum of party faithful and extensive consultation with family and well-wishers, I have decided to form an exploratory committee.”
Dr. Acheampong explained that the decision to form an exploratory committee follows broad encouragement from party supporters, consultations with his family, and input from well-wishers.
“This committee will engage key stakeholders, listen to the voices of our grassroots and constituents and test the alignment between my vision and the aspirations of our party and the Ghanaian people. To that end the exploratory committee is expected to share its findings with me within four weeks.”
According to Dr. Acheampong, the committee shares his commitment to party unity, discipline, job creation, food security, youth and infrastructure development, safety, and good governance.
He also outlined his longstanding service to the NPP, citing a political career that spans grassroots activism, serving as a party staffer, parliamentary aspirant, four-term MP, Minister of State, Cabinet Minister, and party financier.
These experiences, he noted, have deepened his understanding of the sacrifices and strategic vision required to sustain the party.
Addressing party members and supporters directly, Dr. Acheampong urged unity and decorum as the party prepares for the future.
