Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the winner of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2026 presidential primaries, securing a decisive 56.48% of the votes and positioning himself as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The election, held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, saw a massive turnout of delegates across the country, with over 196,000 votes cast at more than 300 polling centres.
The Ghana Police Service was deployed as the sole security agency to ensure order throughout the nationwide exercise.
Bawumia received 110,643 votes out of 195,901 valid ballots. His closest rival, Ken Ohene Agyapong, garnered 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 percent, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong secured 36,303 votes, or 18.53 percent.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong received 1,999 votes (1.02 percent) and 402 votes (0.21 percent), respectively. There were 561 rejected ballots, bringing the total votes cast to 196,462.
Other aspirants, including Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, recorded significantly lower totals, with Agyei Agyepong conceding defeat even before the official announcement of the results.
The primaries were widely praised for their peaceful conduct and the active participation of delegates, highlighting the strength of the NPP’s internal democratic processes.
With this victory, Bawumia has solidified his position as the party’s presumptive candidate for the next general elections, winning the majority of seats nationwide and signaling strong nationwide support.
