Former Ghana High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal Ahmed, has been elected as the new Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East after securing victory in the constituency’s by-election.
The poll was organised to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant following the passing of MP Mahama Toure.
Baba Jamal Ahmed, contesting on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), polled 10,884 votes to emerge winner. His closest contender, Baba Ali, secured 4,009 votes.
Independent candidate Umar Sanda obtained 1,885 votes, while David Kanor, also an Independent candidate, garnered 107 votes. Ibrahim Idrissu of the LPG received 43 votes.
A total of 17,048 ballots were cast across 113 polling stations, with 120 rejected ballots recorded.
The NPP candidate conceded defeat and congratulated NDC’s Baba Jamal ahead of EC’s declaration.
The exercise saw relatively low voter participation, which political actors attributed to the ongoing Ramadan period, given that Ayawaso East is a predominantly Muslim constituency.
