Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that the 2027 national budget will include funding for a comprehensive and lasting solution to flooding in Accra and other flood-prone areas across Ghana.
Speaking during the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament, Dr Forson said the decision follows the devastating floods of June 29, which resulted in loss of lives, destruction of property and significant disruption to economic activities.
According to him, President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources to develop a comprehensive flood management plan aimed at addressing the recurring challenge.
He explained that the necessary funding for the implementation of the plan would be provided for in the 2027 Budget to ensure a sustainable response to flooding across the country.
Dr Forson noted that flooding is not only a Ghanaian challenge but a growing regional concern, pointing to recent flood disasters recorded in countries including Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Côte d’Ivoire.
He stressed the need for coordinated efforts and long-term interventions to protect communities, safeguard livelihoods and build resilience against climate-related disasters.
