The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Wing has launched a strong protest against what it describes as politically motivated arrests of three party sympathisers over alleged threats made in viral videos.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the youth wing accused the Ghana Police Service of applying the law selectively and “serving the interests of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) instead of the nation.”
The three detainees — TikTok personalities Fante Comedy and AY, along with activist Sir-Obama Pokuase — were reportedly arrested after videos surfaced online allegedly containing threats directed at President John Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.
The NPP Youth Wing argued that similar comments made by known NDC supporters in the past have gone unpunished, claiming the latest arrests were “a clear case of political targeting.”
They insisted that the right to free speech must be upheld regardless of political affiliation, and warned that the use of security agencies to intimidate opponents “undermines Ghana’s democratic values.”
The group is demanding the immediate release of the trio, vowing to escalate their protest if the police fail to act swiftly.
The statement noted, We are shocked that a serious establishment like the Ghana Police Service will waste resources to arrest and detain young citizens who, out of exuberance, made comments deemed unsuitable for the moment. These Social Media Activists, like all of us, acknowledge the grief that has gripped the nation. This is shamelessly biased and absolutely partisan. We strongly condemn these arrests. It flies in the face of our democratic ethos. We demand the unconditional and immediate release of Fante Comedy, AY and Sir-Obama Pokuase.
Police have yet to respond publicly to the allegations, but the case has already sparked heated political debate ahead of the 2026 elections.
