Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen has unveiled a new political identity for his movement, officially transforming the Movement for Change into the United Party (UP Plus).
According to him, the move marks the beginning of a new era of accountability, inclusion, and visionary governance in Ghana.
Speaking At a ceremony in Accra on Thursday, October 16, Mr. Kyerematen described the rebrand as “a new dawn” in Ghana’s political journey, designed to break the country free from the dominance of the NPP and NDC and to build a credible alternative rooted in competence and integrity.
“A new dawn that will bring about economic transformation, which will translate into massive job opportunities, usher in a golden age of business, and create prosperity for our country, Ghana,” he said.
“A new dawn that will promote accountable and transparent governance and introduce a policy of zero tolerance for corruption. A new dawn that will at least protect the environment and promote sustainable development.”
The newly renamed United Party (UP Plus) draws inspiration from Ghana’s pre-independence political history, paying tribute to the original United Party that once symbolized unity and liberal democratic ideals.
Party Chairman Abubakar Saddique Boniface said the new identity reflects a rebirth of purpose and values.
The Electoral Commission officially registered the United Party on October 3, 2025, formalizing its place as Ghana’s newest political force.
Mr. Kyerematen, a former Minister of Trade and Industry and ex-member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), broke away in 2023, citing internal strife and what he called “unfair treatment” within the ruling party.
He later launched the Movement for Change, using the butterfly as its symbol — representing renewal and transformation.
With the rebrand, Kyerematen says the butterfly has now evolved into something bigger: a united movement aimed at building “the economic powerhouse of Africa by 2040.”
