The Electoral Commission has set Tuesday, September 2, 2025, a by-election in the Akwatia Constituency for following the demise of the Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
In a statement signed by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa on Wednesday, July 30, the by-election is being organized in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution due to the vacancy created in Parliament.
According to the EC, nomination of candidates will take place from Monday, August 11 to Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the Commission’s Denkyembour District Office.
“The Electoral Commission wishes to announce for the information of the General Public that, following the unfortunate death of the Member of Parliament for the Akwatia Constituency; Hon. Ernest Kumi, the seat of the Constituency in Parliament has become vacant. In accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, as amended, the Electoral Commission will hold a By-Election in the Constituency on Tuesday, 2nd September, 2025.”
Submissions will be accepted between 9:00am and 12:00pm, and from 2:00pm to 5:00pm on each day.
Interested aspirants are to download nomination forms from the Commission’s website, [www.ec.gov.gh](http://www.ec.gov.gh), from July 30 to August 13.
Completed forms must be submitted in quadruplicate, endorsed by a proposer and a seconder who are both registered voters, along with the support of 18 additional registered voters from the constituency.
Each candidate is required to submit two passport-sized photographs and a declaration of consent to the nomination. The filing fee for the election is GHS 10,000 per candidate, but female candidates and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of GHS 7,500.
The Commission urged all stakeholders to observe the timeline and requirements ahead of the by-election.
