The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has publicly accused high-ranking officials of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of issuing threats and committing acts of physical assault against some of its senior leaders.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong on Wednesday, September 3, the party said that NDC First National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, and Abuakwa North Constituency Communication Officer, Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, targeted key NPP figures, including Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, with threats of death.
The statement further accused Chief Azorka and his associates of physically attacking the party’s 3rd National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, describing the incident as “unprovoked and reckless.”
According to the NPP, such actions undermine Ghana’s democratic processes and risk escalating insecurity, particularly given the country’s recent drop in the Global Peace Index ranking.
The party said it will lodge formal complaints with the Ghana Police Service and called on the Inspector-General of Police to immediately arrest and investigate the individuals involved, as well as anyone captured in widely circulated video footage of the attacks.
“The recklessness of the actions of Chief Sofo Azorka and Alhaji Abdul Wahab ought to be properly investigated and punished,” the statement concluded, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability and protection of political leaders.
