Election Watch Ghana has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to reschedule the Akwatia by-election which is on September 2, 2025, following the demise of Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement dated Monday, August 11, the group cited constitutional and statutory provisions that grant the EC the authority to adjust electoral timelines under exceptional circumstances.
They argued that the loss of Dr. Boamah — a key member of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) — and seven others in the August 6 helicopter crash warrants the exercise of such discretion.
“In light of the recent passing of 8 gallant citizens which including Dr. Omane Boamah, Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress, Election Watch Ghana respectfully requests that the Electoral Commission (EC) consider postponing the upcoming Akwantia by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025.”
“Pursuant to Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution, the EC is mandated to exercise its discretionary powers in a fair and just manner. Given the circumstances, a postponement would be in line with this constitutional provision, ensuring that the electoral process is conducted without undue prejudice to any party,” the statement said.
The group added that a brief delay would allow the NDC to reorganise, ensure fairness, and serve as a fitting tribute to Dr. Boamah’s legacy.
Election Watch Ghana has also requested an emergency IPAC meeting to discuss possible rescheduling, stressing that a level playing field is crucial for all parties involved.
The August 6 crash in Adansi-Akrofuom claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians: Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong.
The rest were former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Two of the victims were buried on August 10 at the Military Cemetery in Accra, while the government has announced a state funeral for all victims on Friday, August 15, 2025.
The public has been invited to submit tributes ahead of the ceremony.
