Former Education Minister and Bosomtwe MP, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has pushed back against the “wholesale apology” offered by NPP 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He argued that such a broad apology wrongly suggests the NPP’s time in office was a complete failure, despite the administration’s notable achievements.
“In terms of education, including infrastructural development, policy initiatives, and investments, the NPP is second to none,” Dr. Adutwum asserted. “When Dr. Bawumia says we apologise for performing badly, he is conveying an erroneous impression.”
He also dismissed a viral claim suggesting he had accused Dr. Bawumia of economic mismanagement, clarifying that he made no such remarks.
According to him, Ghana’s economy was performing well before the COVID-19 pandemic, citing efforts by the Akufo-Addo government to lower interest rates, stabilize the currency, and reduce inflation. The downturn during the pandemic, he explained, was a result of prioritizing lives over economic gains.
Dr. Adutwum further criticized the opposition NDC for failing to fulfil campaign promises such as abolishing the double-track SHS system, scrapping STEM education, and ending the Buffer Stock system within 120 days of assuming office.
“If anyone should be apologizing, it should be the NDC, who criticized the Free SHS, STEM Education, and school feeding grant system introduced by the NPP government,” he said.
“They promised to abolish these policies but have so far failed to do so, which indicates that the policies I initiated were forward-looking and visionary.”
