Former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has declared his intention to run for Presidential race of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
This was confirmed by Dr. Adutwum in a post shared on his X account on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
He expressed his readiness to lead the party if nominations are officially opened ahead of the 2028 December elections
Dr. Adutwum stated, “With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the Flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party.”
His declaration comes a day after the NPP officially announced that it will hold its presidential primaries on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
The date was agreed upon during a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua confirmed the decision at a press briefing, explaining that the timeline conforms to the party’s constitution and does not require any amendments.
The primaries are expected to attract strong contenders, with several influential party figures already showing interest in the race.
These include former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko.
