The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that fresh parliamentary elections will be held in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.
This follows months of disagreement between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the outcome of the 2024 parliamentary election in the constituency.
The EC had initially rejected calls for a rerun, arguing that the results from the remaining three polling stations could still be collated to determine the winner.
However, persistent concerns from stakeholders have prompted the Commission to take this latest step to resolve the impasse.
In a statement dated Wednesday, July 2, the EC confirmed that following engagements with both parties, it had decided to conduct elections in 19 of the 37 disputed polling stations.
It further clarified that 18 of the 37 polling stations will not be affected by the rerun, as the scanned results from those stations had been verified by the Presiding Officers and approved by party agents.
The EC has called on the Ghana Police Service to provide the necessary security to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
“After extensive deliberations, the Commission informed the Political Parties that it would proceed to rerun the election in 19 out of the 37 Polling Stations. The Commission arrived at the decision to rerun the election in the underlisted Polling Stations because, the 19 scanned Polling Station results used for the collation, though approved by Agents of both Political Parties, were not verified by the Presiding Officers responsible for those Polling Stations.
“It is instructive to note that, the Commission was able to secure the Presiding Officers’ verification and confirmation for 18 scanned Polling Station results – Agents of both parties also approved same. A rerun will therefore not be held in those Polling Stations. The Election will be held on Friday, 11th July, 2025. We count on the Ghana Police Service to provide the needed security to ensure a safe environment for the conduct of the Election,” the EC explained.
The Ablekuma North rerun is expected to bring finality to the long-standing electoral dispute in the constituency, as residents lack Member of Parliament currently.
