The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is undergoing a major shift in its mandate, the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, has revealed.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Dr. Bampoe said the NHIA is moving beyond its traditional role as “a claims payment mechanism” to become “a strategic health purchasing provider,” giving the authority greater influence over health outcomes across the country.
He noted, “We are able to determine the prices of medicines, the prices of services and even go on to the global stage and give Ghana some kind of platform to discuss what kind of health outcomes we want.”
Dr. Bampoe highlighted key initiatives under the NHIA’s strategic focus, including the Free Primary Health Care program and the Mahama Cares initiative, which targets non-communicable diseases — now responsible for “fully 40%, 45% of all-cause mortality” in Ghana.
This transformation, he explained, positions NHIA as a central driver in shaping Ghana’s healthcare delivery and ensuring citizens have access to essential services while improving efficiency and financial sustainability.
