Tensions in Mpatuam in the Amansie West District, boiled over on Tuesday after a violent confrontation between residents and Asanko Mine security forces left an Assembly Member dead and two others injured.

The deceased, Samuel Danquah, Assembly Member for Aboabo, was reportedly shot during the clashes, which followed earlier allegations that mine security had killed a miner on Monday, September 8.

The incident ignited anger in the community, prompting residents to block major roads in protest.

Witnesses say the demonstrations spiraled into chaos after soldiers were deployed to restore order, leading to the deadly gunfire. Two others wounded in the clashes are currently receiving medical care.

In retaliation, enraged youth torched vehicles belonging to Asanko Mines, deepening fears of further unrest.

Speaking to GhOne News, Ashanti Regional Correspondent Isaac Justice Bediako, the Assembly Member for Mpatuam, Kwame Sakyi, described the situation as “out of hand,” stressing the community’s growing sense of insecurity.

“The people believe their colleague was killed by mine security, and now we have lost another respected leader. The youth are demanding justice and accountability,” he said.

The killing has intensified long-standing tensions between mining companies and host communities in the Ashanti Region, where disputes over land, environmental impact, and alleged human rights abuses continue to fuel mistrust.

Local leaders are appealing for calm, while civil society groups are urging government and Asanko Mines to conduct a full investigation and ensure justice for victims. For now, Mpatuam remains on edge as security forces maintain a heavy presence and residents vow to continue pressing for answers
