The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in collaboration with National Security and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has commenced the second phase of a demolition exercise aimed at clearing illegal structures encroaching on watercourses within Tema, Klagon, and the Sakumo Ramsar sites.
The targeted structures, built within the wetland, have been identified as contributing factors to the recurring floods in the area.
The exercise is being led by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, who also supervised the first phase of the operation.
The initiative seeks to restore the natural flow of floodwaters, minimize the risk of future flooding, and preserve the ecological integrity of the wetland.
The initial phase of the demolition, which began on May 27, 2025, was temporarily halted due to concerns raised by owners of the equipment hired for the operation.
