Gavi Summit: Mahama in Brussel to advocates for global vaccine drive

President John Dramani Mahama is currently in Brussels in Belgium, where he’s taking part in the Global Summit on Health and Prosperity through Immunisation, advocating strongly for the Gavi Alliance’s vital vaccine replenishment initiatives.

This was confirmed in a statement from the Presidency On Wednesday, June 25

The summit, which is co-hosted by the European Union, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi), unites world leaders, health specialists, philanthropists, and civil society groups to rally around Gavi’s ambitious strategy for 2026–2030.

This aims to immunize an extra 500 million children, avert over 8 million deaths, prevent up to 150 disease outbreaks, and generate more than $100 billion in economic benefits worldwide.

President Mahama’s participation highlights his enduring commitment to vaccine equity and the advancement of healthcare throughout Africa.

Back in 2013, Mahama supported Gavi’s mission, helping to mobilize resources to safeguard the health of children around the globe.

This current summit reflects his belief in a well-funded Gavi as essential not just for saving lives but also for unlocking economic opportunities and reinforcing global health security.

The statement emphasized the summit as a crucial opportunity to secure renewed commitments from both traditional and emerging donors.

It also highlighted Gavi’s impressive track record, with over a billion children vaccinated, more than 18.8 million deaths prevented, and over $250 billion in economic benefits generated for lower-income economies since the Alliance was formed in 2000.

While in Brussels, President Mahama is expected to engage in significant discussions with global leaders, including the President of the EU Council of Ministers and philanthropist Bill Gates.
