Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has accused President John Mahama of orchestrating a targeted campaign of intimidation against him due to his ambition to become the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking in an interview after a dramatic raid on his residence by national security operatives on Friday, May, 23rd, 2025, Wontumi claimed the aggressive tactics used were not about law enforcement, but politically motivated.
“This is not about justice. It’s about stopping me from contesting for National Chairman,” he said.
According to Wontumi, armed operatives stormed his home with about 100 military and police officers, using guns, axes, and sticks.
He resisted for over 30 minutes and even unleashed his dogs in defense. “They couldn’t drag me out. I didn’t bow to them,” he said.
He further alleged that a helicopter was on standby to transport him to Tamale, and a drone used in the operation crashed inside his compound. “They even begged me to return their drone,” he added.
Despite being served a warrant—one he has already agreed to honor on May 26—Wontumi questioned why such excessive force was used. “If I’ve agreed to appear in court, why bring weapons and a whole army? This is personal,” he stated.
Wontumi warned that such intimidation tactics could endanger Ghana’s stability. “What Mahama is doing is dangerous. If care is not taken, it could lead to a coup. He fears the people he has handed power to,” he said.
He also revealed that his bank accounts have been frozen without any formal notice, and alleged that operatives intended to plant illegal items in his home to frame him.
“They want to destroy me like they did in 2013. Now it’s happening again in 2025,” he said.
Calling on the Ghanaian public and the international community to take note, Wontumi urged, “This is bigger than me. It’s about democracy, fairness, and political freedom in Ghana.”
