The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has thrown its support behind Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, dismissing speculation that the party intends to reshuffle its parliamentary leadership.
General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said the party had neither held a meeting nor considered deliberations on replacing Mr Afenyo-Markin and the existing Minority leadership team.
Addressing the media on Thursday, October 29, he described the reports as attempts to sow confusion among the party’s parliamentary ranks.
“The party has never had any meeting. The party has never thought about even deliberating to change the leadership in parliament. We have not,” he stressed.
Kodua Frimpong maintained that the party’s leadership was pleased with the work of the Minority Caucus and had no reason to initiate changes.
“The leadership of our party, especially the elected officers, chaired by Chairman John Boadu, are very happy. We are overwhelmingly satisfied with the work being done by the leadership in parliament, led by Afenyo-Markin,” he said.
He further warned that those circulating the reports would not succeed in creating divisions within the caucus.
“So those who are busily peddling lies and trying to create discourse or confusion among the leadership in parliament and the mighty minority caucus, they will not succeed,” he added.
The NPP General Secretary said the party would continue backing the parliamentary leadership as it worked alongside the party’s flagbearer towards its electoral objectives.
“And we shall continue to give them the support that they need to make sure that together with our flag bearer and the party, we win the elections in 2023,” he stated.
His comments reaffirm the party’s publicly stated position that Afenyo-Markin and his team retain its confidence, despite speculation about a possible leadership shake-up.
The Minority Leader heads the NPP’s parliamentary caucus, which plays a central role in scrutinising government policies, holding the government accountable in Parliament and coordinating the opposition’s legislative activities.
