Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has welcomed the commencement of Uganda Airlines’ operations in Ghana, describing the new air service as an important step towards strengthening connectivity between West and East Africa.
The Ugandan national carrier began operating flights to Accra on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, introducing a four-times-weekly service linking Entebbe, Lagos and Accra.
Speaking at the inaugural flight reception, Mr Nikpe said improved air connectivity was essential to promoting trade, tourism and business cooperation among African countries.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in aviation infrastructure to strengthen Ghana’s position as a preferred destination for international travel.
The Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited, Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, welcomed the airline’s entry into the Ghanaian market, saying it reflected the country’s growing appeal as a destination for aviation investment.
She said the new service was expected to expand travel options, stimulate tourism and cultural exchange, facilitate trade and strengthen economic cooperation between Ghana and Uganda.
Chief Executive of Uganda Airlines, Mr Girma Wake, also said the service would improve air connectivity between the two African regions and make travel more accessible for passengers.
The new route is expected to provide additional travel options for businesspeople, tourists and other passengers travelling between Ghana, Uganda and markets along the route.
Uganda Airlines’ entry into Ghana forms part of broader efforts to improve air links across the continent and reduce the difficulties associated with lengthy transit journeys.
The service operates four times a week, with flights connecting Entebbe to Accra via Lagos, Nigeria.
The development is expected to create opportunities for stronger commercial relationships and improve the movement of people between West and East Africa.
The Transport Ministry has maintained that continued investment in aviation infrastructure will be important in supporting the growth of the sector and enhancing Ghana’s role as a regional aviation gateway.
