The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested four suspects and recovered 142 parcels of compressed suspected Indian hemp in an intelligence-led operation, with officers also rejecting an alleged GH¢50,000 bribe.
The operation was carried out by the Command’s Special Operations Team, known as Red Maria, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m.
According to a statement, the team intercepted a mini commercial van travelling from Bimbilla to Tamale. The vehicle, with registration number GW 7800-14, was being driven by 46-year-old Alhassan Zeblim, who was suspected of transporting narcotic drugs.

A search of the vehicle uncovered 142 compressed parcels of suspected Indian hemp concealed in four jute sacks, commonly known as Ghana-Must-Go bags.
The police said the driver identified 34-year-old Ibrahim Yussif, a tricycle rider in Tamale, as the intended recipient of the consignment.
Yussif later arrived at an agreed location in the company of his brother, 56-year-old Bawa Yussif. Mohammed Haruna, 32, was subsequently identified as the owner of the consignment and arrested.
The police said the suspects allegedly attempted to bribe the arresting officers with GH¢50,000, but the officers rejected the offer.
“The suspects allegedly offered the arresting officers a bribe of GH¢50,000, which the officers rejected,” the statement said.
The four suspects, together with the exhibits, including a tricycle, have been handed over to the Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) for further investigation.
The Command commended the officers for their swift action and integrity and encouraged similar conduct among personnel across the region.
Investigations are ongoing into the suspected narcotics consignment and the alleged attempted bribery.
