One of the children who sustained critical injuries in Thursday’s crash on the Dzorwulu Highway has died, according to an update from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The child was among 11 children, aged between three and 10, who were travelling in a Sprinter bus when it was involved in a collision with a tipper truck on Thursday, July 30.
In an update shared by the GNFS, the Service said the child, who had been receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Police Hospital, succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash.
“One of the kids who was on admission at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Police Hospital has unfortunately passed on,” the Fire Service said.
The GNFS expressed its condolences to the bereaved family.
“Our condolences to the family,” it added.
Earlier preliminary findings by the Fire Service indicated that the children were returning from Ashaiman towards Accra, contrary to initial reports that they had been on an excursion.
The Service also indicated that it is believed the tipper truck driver attempted a wrongful overtaking manoeuvre before crashing into the stationary Sprinter bus carrying the children.
The remaining children who survived the crash are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital and the Police Hospital, with some reported to be in critical condition.
