Energy and Green Transition Minister Dr John Jinapor has highlighted the government’s investment commitments of US$3.5 billion towards expanding operations and drilling new wells as part of efforts to revitalise Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector and restore investor confidence.
Dr Jinapor made the remarks during a fireside chat at the opening ceremony of African Energy Week, where he joined Kosmos Energy Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Inglis and African Energy Chamber Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk to discuss Ghana’s experience in attracting investment into the oil and gas industry.
He said the government was pursuing sustained engagement with investors alongside legal and fiscal reforms to create a more competitive, predictable and business-friendly environment while protecting Ghana’s national interests.
According to the Minister, these efforts were yielding encouraging results, including significant investment commitments and positive developments in crude oil production.
Dr Jinapor said the government’s priority was to sustain the momentum, strengthen local participation and increase domestic value addition by refining more of Ghana’s crude oil locally.
He explained that expanding local refining capacity could support industry, create jobs and enhance the country’s energy security.
The Minister stressed that the broader objective was to attract investment while ensuring that Ghana derived lasting national benefits from its natural resources.
Dr Jinapor expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to providing the energy sector with the attention, strategic direction and support needed to drive investment, economic growth and national development.
He said the government remained focused on building an environment that would encourage investment, protect Ghanaian interests and translate the country’s petroleum resources into shared prosperity for its people.
