President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new ultramodern 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra, adding to the facility’s capacity to provide medical care for police personnel and members of the general public.

The new complex is expected to accommodate more patients, improve access to specialised treatment and reduce the need to transfer patients to other health facilities for medical attention.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, October 13, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno highlighted the importance of the project to the welfare of police officers, stressing that their physical and mental well-being is essential to their ability to protect lives and property.

The commissioning marks an addition to the healthcare infrastructure of the Ghana Police Hospital, which serves both personnel of the Ghana Police Service and members of the public.

The 85-bed facility is expected to strengthen the hospital’s ability to accommodate patients and provide a wider range of medical services within its premises.

Addressing the ceremony, Mr. Yohuno described the project as an important step towards improving healthcare provision within the police service.

“This landmark facility marks a major step in standardising health as a fundamental human right for the Ghana Police Service,” he said.

The IGP’s remarks highlighted the importance of ensuring that police officers have access to appropriate medical care as part of efforts to safeguard their welfare and support their demanding responsibilities.

Mr. Yohuno stressed that the health of police officers was closely connected to their ability to perform their duties effectively.

“This principle matters because officers’ ability to protect life and property depends largely on their physical and mental well-being,” he stated.

Police officers are regularly required to respond to emergencies, maintain public order and protect lives and property. These responsibilities make access to healthcare an important aspect of their welfare.

The new ward complex is expected to contribute to efforts to improve medical services available to officers while also supporting patients who depend on the hospital for treatment.

The IGP’s comments also drew attention to the importance of recognising mental health alongside physical health in the overall well-being of personnel.

One of the expected benefits of the new complex is an improvement in the hospital’s capacity to provide specialised care without transferring patients to other facilities.

Mr. Yohuno said the development would help reduce the difficulties associated with referrals, including additional expenses and inconvenience for patients and their families.

“Most importantly, the complex will allow more specialised care to be provided on site, reducing the need to transfer patients elsewhere and helping to minimise the associated costs and inconvenience,” he said.

The availability of more specialised services within the hospital could help patients access appropriate treatment more conveniently and reduce the logistical challenges associated with moving between facilities.

However, the extent of these benefits will depend on the availability of qualified medical personnel, equipment and other resources required to operate the additional beds and provide specialised treatment.

The commissioning of the 85-bed ward complex represents an expansion of healthcare infrastructure at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra.

Beyond its potential benefits to police personnel, the facility is also expected to support healthcare delivery to members of the general public who seek treatment at the hospital.
