The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged the Governing Council of the National Defence University of Ghana to uphold meritocracy, fairness and academic excellence in the administration of the institution.
He said admissions, student registration, graduation and staff appointments must be guided by merit and the highest professional standards, without discrimination based on race, ethnicity, political opinion, colour, gender, occupation, religion or disability.
Mr Iddrisu made the call at the official inauguration of the University’s Governing Council, where he stressed the need to build an institution anchored in professionalism, discipline and integrity.
He said the University had an important role to play in strengthening Ghana’s defence and security capabilities through specialised education, research and professional training.
According to the Minister, the institution is expected to become a centre of excellence in strategic studies, operational readiness, defence research and security policy development.
He noted that such a focus would help equip military personnel and other security professionals with the knowledge and expertise needed to respond effectively to emerging national, regional and global security challenges.
Mr Iddrisu further emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards in the University’s academic and administrative processes to ensure that it develops into a credible institution capable of meeting the country’s evolving defence and security needs.
The inauguration of the Governing Council marks an important step in establishing the University’s governance framework and setting the direction for its academic and institutional development.
The institution is expected to contribute to building a skilled and professional security workforce capable of addressing increasingly complex defence and security threats.
