The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has commended the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) for its contribution to Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.
The Minister praised GIFEC’s work in expanding digital inclusion, improving connectivity and developing digital skills during the Government Accountability Series held at the Flagstaff House in Accra.
He highlighted the impact of the Fund’s Rural Telephony Project (RTP), which is extending telecommunications connectivity to underserved and unserved communities across the country.
Mr George said the Ministry, in collaboration with GIFEC, the National Communications Authority (NCA) and Mobile Network Operators, was prioritising the upgrade of rural 2G and 3G infrastructure to 4G and 5G-capable networks.
He said the upgrades would be supported by fibre and microwave infrastructure to improve broadband connectivity and expand access to reliable digital services in rural communities.
The Minister also recognised GIFEC’s support for key digital skills initiatives, including the National Girls in ICT Programme and the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP).
Earlier in the day, the Ministry, in partnership with GIFEC, officially launched the National Girls in ICT Programme at the Kofi Annan Training Centre in Accra.
The ceremony was attended by Mr George and the Chief Executive Officer of GIFEC, Sofo Tanko Rashid-Computer.
As part of the programme, the Minister congratulated 100 outstanding girls selected from the 2025/2026 programme, with 50 beneficiaries each drawn from the Volta and Upper East Regions.
Mr George said GIFEC’s support through its ICT centres, regional offices, infrastructure and equipment had been instrumental in advancing the country’s digital skills development initiatives.
