The New Winneba clash has claimed another life, pushing the death toll to four, while 17 people are now receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the violence in Ghana’s Central Region.
The latest casualty was among those receiving treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital after sustaining injuries during the clash. The death brings the number of fatalities from three to four, while the number of injured has increased from 15 to 17.
The violence, reportedly linked to a longstanding land dispute, erupted after residents from five communities in the Gomoa area allegedly mobilised and attacked residents of New Winneba.
The attackers are said to have targeted residents and properties, with the violence also reaching the Effutu North District Police Command, where a police officer was reportedly shot.
The development has triggered a heightened security presence in New Winneba, with the Central Regional Police Command and other security agencies deploying personnel to the area to restore calm and prevent possible reprisal attacks.
The bodies of the four deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, while the 17 injured persons remain under medical care.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the incident, including the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation, as security personnel maintain a presence in the affected communities.
