The Assin Fosu District Court has remanded a 37-year-old self-styled spiritualist and herbalist, Enoch Antwi, alias Nana Kakali, into police custody for allegedly stealing a Hyundai Atos taxi at Assin Manso in the Assin South District of the Central Region.
Antwi, who is reportedly known to the police for alleged car-snatching activities in the area, was charged with stealing and is expected to reappear before the court on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
The prosecution told the court that Antwi allegedly disappeared with the taxi after the vehicle got stuck while he was accompanying the owner, Benjamin Akyerefi Baidoo, to deliver items to his sister.
According to Chief Inspector Gilbert Abanga Anyongo, the complainant first met Antwi on July 1, 2026, when he visited Assin Manso to purchase a dove for spiritual purposes, leading to an exchange of contacts.
The prosecutor said on July 17, the complainant met Antwi after work and took him home, where Antwi allegedly prepared a concoction for him to use for a spiritual bath.
Later that evening, Mr Baidoo asked Antwi to accompany him in his Hyundai Atos taxi to deliver some items to his sister. However, when the vehicle became stuck along the way, Mr Baidoo walked to his sister’s residence after Antwi assured him he would remain with the car.
Upon his return, the complainant allegedly found both the taxi and Antwi missing. Attempts to reach him by phone were unsuccessful.
The matter was reported to the Assin Fosu Cybercrime Unit on August 12, after which investigators obtained a court order to assist MTN Ghana in retrieving telecommunications records linked to the case.
The prosecutor said intelligence gathered from the records and further investigations led officers to Antwi’s hideout at Agona Swedru, where he was arrested on August 23 by the Cybercrime Unit of the Central North Regional Police Command.
During interrogation, Antwi allegedly admitted stealing the vehicle and told investigators he had sold it to scrap dealers for GH¢7,000, receiving GH¢2,500 as part payment.
He subsequently led the police to Suhum, where the stolen Hyundai Atos was recovered.
The court, presided over by Abdul Majid Iliasu, granted the prosecution’s request to remand Antwi in custody to allow investigators to complete their work.
