A coordinated operation between Ghanaian and Lebanese law enforcement authorities has led to the arrest of a Syrian national at Beirut airport over the alleged trafficking of approximately 40 kilogrammes of cocaine from Ghana.
The suspect was arrested on Saturday, October 31, at Rafic Hariri International Airport after arriving from Accra with the suspected drugs concealed in two pieces of luggage, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has disclosed.
In a statement dated Sunday, November 1, NACOC said the arrest resulted from a controlled-delivery exercise involving operational cooperation between Ghanaian and Lebanese drug enforcement authorities.
The exercise was designed to track the shipment and identify individuals involved at different stages of the supply chain.
NACOC explained that the operation sought to gather intelligence that would help dismantle the broader transnational criminal network behind the suspected cocaine shipment.
The commission said efforts were ongoing to apprehend other individuals believed to be connected to the operation in Ghana.
“As part of ongoing operation, NACOC is working to arrest his accomplices in Ghana,” it said.
The operation highlights the role of cross-border intelligence-sharing in tackling international drug trafficking, particularly where suspected shipments move between countries.
NACOC said the joint exercise underscored Ghana and Lebanon’s commitment to disrupting international drug trafficking networks through cooperation between their law enforcement agencies.
