The Savannah Regional Police Command, with support from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and the Police Intelligence Directorate, has dismantled a robbery syndicate allegedly responsible for the theft of GHS430,000 from two Mobile Money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market on June 29, 2026.
The operation followed the deployment of a specialised team by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to assist the Savannah Regional Command with investigations into the robbery.
According to the police, preliminary investigations established that four armed men attacked the two vendors at the market and fired sporadically before making away with the cash.
The suspects were reportedly armed with two pump-action guns, a single-barrel gun and an AK-47 assault rifle.
After weeks of surveillance, the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, working with the Police Intelligence Directorate and the Kintampo Divisional Police Command, arrested 28-year-old suspect Yacouba Oumar at Soronuase in the Bono East Region on July 23, 2026.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted taking part in the robbery and identified his accomplices as Yakubu Seidu, alias Baba; Abdulai Aziz Yahaya, alias Addo; and Abduli Buipe, alias Addo.
Police investigations further revealed that the group was allegedly contracted by a cattle trader at the Buipe market identified as Alhaji Yacouba, also known by the aliases Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, to carry out the robbery.
Based on information gathered during the investigation, police teams proceeded to Atebubu, Soronuase, Agogo and Dawadawa in pursuit of other members of the alleged syndicate.
The police said an exchange of gunfire occurred during the operation, resulting in the deaths of suspects Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya and Oumaro Amadu.
Their bodies have been deposited at a morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The police also retrieved a pump-action gun and five live BB cartridges, as well as a single-barrel gun believed to have been used during the robbery.
Suspect Yacouba Oumar remains in police custody and is assisting with investigations.
The police said efforts were ongoing to arrest Alhaji Yacouba and other persons suspected to be connected to the robbery.
The Savannah Regional Police Command assured the public that investigations would continue to ensure that all persons involved in the robbery are identified and brought to justice.
