The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Technical Universities Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) have temporarily suspended their ongoing strike following an appeal by the Education Minister for the associations to give government one month to resolve the outstanding issues.
The suspension follows renewed engagement between the two associations and the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Vice Chancellors Ghana and Vice Chancellors of Technical Universities Ghana.
The Education Minister appealed to the affected associations to allow government a one-month window to work towards resolving the issues that led to the industrial action, leading to the decision to temporarily suspend the strike.
In a joint statement dated Thursday, August 20, 2026, GAUA and TUSAAG said the stakeholders had committed to renewed and time-bound discussions on the outstanding matters.
“In the spirit of good faith and social dialogue, our two Associations have resolved to give this engagement the space it requires to yield results. We urge our members across all affected institutions to resume normal duties while these discussions proceed.”
The two associations, however, stressed that the suspension was not a permanent end to the industrial action and would depend on demonstrable progress in the negotiations.
“We wish to state clearly that this suspension is temporary and conditional on demonstrable progress.”
They further cautioned that they could resume the strike without further notice if the renewed engagement, particularly with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), failed to produce satisfactory outcomes within the agreed timeframe.
“GAUA and TUSAAG reserve the right to resume this suspended industrial action, without further notice, should the outcome of engagement, particularly with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), fail to yield satisfactory outcomes within the published and agreed timeframe.”
The associations thanked their members for their solidarity and discipline during the strike and expressed appreciation to the general public for its patience and understanding.
The temporary suspension therefore gives government and the associations a one-month window to resolve the outstanding concerns and avert a possible return to industrial action.
