New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives in the Ashanti Region have held an emotional vigil in Kumasi in support of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
During the vigil, some party executives reportedly knelt and appealed to President John Dramani Mahama for the release of the embattled regional chairman.
Meanwhile, the NPP is going to the polls today to elect regional executives to prosecute the party’s agenda and strategy going into the 2028 general elecctions.
The gathering was marked by prayers and emotional appeals for the well-being and release of Mr Wontumi, who is currently serving a custodial sentence following his conviction in a case involving offences against the state.
The development has generated renewed political discussion, with supporters of the NPP calling for intervention on behalf of the former regional chairman.
President Mahama has previously maintained that matters involving criminal prosecution and sentencing are determined through the judicial process and that the executive does not control the courts.
Mr Wontumi’s supporters, however, continue to express concern over his detention and have used public gatherings, prayers and other engagements to appeal for his release.
The Kumasi vigil brought together NPP supporters and executives who prayed for Mr Wontumi and called for a favourable outcome to efforts seeking his release.
