The Asante-Akim North Municipal Assembly has rejected the President’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Sarah Amoakowaa, in a chaotic voting process that saw security personnel stepping in to restore order.
Tensions flared even before the final tally was announced, with reports of heated exchanges among the assembly members. The situation escalated resulting in some damages, prompting state security officials to intervene and restore calm.
Out of the 31 assembly members who voted, Amoakowaa secured only 17 votes, falling short of the required two-thirds majority for confirmation.
Speaking after the vote, the Presiding Member of the Assembly confirmed that the nominee did not meet the necessary threshold for confirmation.
“A new date will be announced for another voting exercise,” the Presiding Member stated, indicating that the assembly would reconvene to either reconsider Madam Amoakowaa or review a new nominee.
Kumawu Assembly deadlocked
In a related development, the Kumawu District Assembly has failed to elect a Presiding Member after two rounds of voting.
In the first round, Richard Gyamfi got 15 votes, Addai Abankwa 17, and Sampson Amankwa 3, with a total of 36 ballots counted after a correction.
A re-election saw Gyamfi secure 22 votes, Abankwa 13, and one rejected ballot, but neither reached the two-thirds majority required.
A fresh vote is set for 19 May.
Other jurisdictions
Elsewhere at Atwima Kwanwoma the president’s nominee Grace Asamoah Agyemang has received unanimous approval as the new Municipal Chief Executive, securing 100% endorsement from assembly members.
All 47 eligible voters—comprising 15 government appointees and 32 elected members—voted in her favour, giving her a perfect score of 47 “Yes” votes.
Presiding Member Kwame Anthony Nsiah said the assembly members remain committed to supporting the nominee.
Meanwhile the nominees for Offinso North, Kwabre East, Akrofuom, Offinso North and Sekyere South have all been confirmed by their respective assemblymembers.
